Norma was born in Jamestown, North Dakota. She heard big
band music on the radio as a young girl and always had the dream
of becoming a singer. She sung in the high school glee club and
in church. Then she changed her name to Peggy Lee and went to
Hollywood but that didn't work out too well for her—she worked
as a waitress instead of a singer. Peggy ended up in Chicago and
was singing in a nightclub there when Benny Goodman came in,
heard her beautiful voice and asked her to join his band. That was
her big break. Peggy became a popular singer and had many hit
songs—some of which she wrote—and appeared in movies and on
television. Peggy's sound was all about her very own stylish,
delicate kind of swing.
