Thomas was born in Kansas City, Missouri and grew up in New
York City. As a child, he played piano at his school and organ in
his father's Harlem church. When he was only fifteen, he worked
as the organist in a theater on 135th Street in Harlem. Then he
met the great pianist James P. Johnson, who helped him get
started professionally. Fats went on to become one of the most
respected pianists in the stride style. He wrote famous show
tunes, appeared in movies, formed his own big band and toured
all over the world. He wore a cool derby. People loved his playing,
his zany spirit and his clever, funny songs. Fats was one of a kind.
