Ella was born in Newport News, Virginia. As a young girl, she
had to move to New York and live in an orphanage. When she was
sixteen, Ella won an amateur contest at Harlem's Apollo Theater.
Then she got hired to sing with Chick Webb's big band and that
started it all. The band loved her! The people dancing loved her!
Ella became an overnight star. She went on to perform and record
with every great musician and bandleader. She even became a
bandleader herself. Ella was known as "The First Lady of Song"
She was one of the greatest singers the world has ever known.
