Cabell was born on Christmas Day in Rochester, New York and
grew up in Baltimore. He started out in law school but dropped out
and traveled to Chicago to work as a singer and dancer. He soon
formed his own bandsfirst in Chicago and then in New York.
When his orchestra filled in for Duke Ellington's band at The Cotton
Club in Harlem, they became the next house band. Mr. Calloway
had an amazing wardrobe, a great personality, and a style all
his own. He was a world-class bandleader that moved with the
groove. His orchestra boasted the greatest musicians of the
day. Cab was truly super hip!
